Case Study

St Peters Lutheran College – Empowering Students Through Esports

St Peters Lutheran College partnered with Computer Alliance to introduce an Esports program that engages students in a competitive, team-based environment using professional-grade gaming equipment. This initiative has transformed extracurricular opportunities and fostered new skills among students.

Challenge

Before 2021, St Peters offered a strong robotics program but identified a gap in digital engagement opportunities. Esports was gaining traction in education, yet implementing a program seemed challenging due to limited resources and lack of specialised hardware. Existing school computers were optimized for academic tasks, not competitive gaming.

Solution

Computer Alliance launched its Esports Initiative, providing five schools each term with access to 10 custom-designed Esports gaming kits. Each kit includes high-performance gaming PCs, monitors, headsets, keyboards, and mice, giving schools everything needed to run a professional Esports program.

Originally used for large-scale Brisbane Esports events, these systems were repurposed during the pandemic to support schools in developing Esports programs. By loaning equipment, Computer Alliance enabled schools to run proof-of-concept trials and build sustainable programs.

At St Peters, this support allowed the school to run a successful trial in Term 3 and 4 of 2021. The program quickly gained momentum and became a valued part of student life.

Implementation

High-Quality Equipment: Students were provided with professional gaming setups, elevating the experience and signaling the school’s commitment to Esports.

Program Development: Teachers integrated Esports into extracurricular activities, creating opportunities for students to train, cast, and compete.

Community Building: The initiative fostered teamwork and inclusivity, engaging students who might not participate in traditional sports.

Impact

Student Engagement: Students expressed excitement and pride in using high-end equipment, reinforcing the value of their skills.Skill Development: Participants improved strategic thinking, communication, and collaboration through competitive gaming.Inclusivity: Esports attracted a diverse group of students, including those less involved in traditional sports, creating a sense of belonging and community.

Looking Ahead

The success at St Peters demonstrates how Esports can complement academic programs and foster digital literacy, teamwork, and competitive spirit. Computer Alliance continues to support schools across Queensland, helping them integrate Esports into education.
